Whether it’s through his business ventures, as a power broker in Washington, a philanthropist or as a former Columbus City Councilman and optometrist, Dr. Robert L. Wright, Jr. is well respected in many circles. That respect took another step up as representatives from the Technical College Foundation of Georgia (TCFA) and the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) on Thursday presented Dr. Wright with a Frabel glass sculpture to commemorate his being named Benefactor of the Year for 2008. The presentation was made during a regularly-scheduled State TCSG Board meeting.

The Foundation is in the final stages of its first capital campaign to benefit Columbus Technical College, Tomorrow’s Workforce… Today, and thanks in great part to the generosity of Dr. Wright, nearly $10 million have been raised. The first building on the college’s future campus on River Road will bear Dr. Wright’s name.
“I am grateful to be blessed enough to make this contribution,” Dr. Wright said. “In the spirit of giving, especially this time of year, I can’t think of a better place to give than Columbus Technical College.”
Columbus Technical College President, J. Robert “Bob” Jones took a moment to thank the community and his staff for their contributions.
“Everybody has been a part of what we’re doing here today. It all started out with Columbus Technical College employees and their 100% level of giving,” Mr. Jones said.
Construction on the approximately 78,000 square foot Dr. Robert L. Wright, Jr. Health Sciences Center will begin by March of 2009 and Columbus Technical College is scheduled to take occupancy in fall of 2010.
