Dental Assisting Student Earns $500 Boost from Scholarship

May 2, 2012:  Dental assisting student Madelene “Summer” Hale still has a little bit of time to go before she graduates from Columbus Technical College in December. But those few months will fly by a little quicker thanks to an extra $500 in her pocket. That’s because Hale is the winner of the 2012 Hinman Scholarship. Whether she chooses to spend the money this fall on her national board exams or on instruments or on something else having to do with her future career, as long as it’s program-related she can spend how she chooses.

Dental assisting program director Sharron Cook was so excited to be able to surprise Hale with the scholarship at a special luncheon April 26th.

“I was ecstatic for Summer! She’s a real go-getter, has perfect attendance, the top GPA in the class, and volunteers to help whenever she can,” Cook said. “Her practicum gives her glowing reviews and I know she’ll be an asset to any dental office lucky enough to hire her when she graduates.”

The Hinman Scholarship is presented by the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Society in Atlanta each year. The society has promoted continuing education in all aspects of the dental profession since its inception in 1912 and began granting scholarships to students in the late 1980’s.
