Dental Hygiene Class President Earns $400 Scholarship

Columbus Technical College dental hygiene student Ashley Sawyer is the proud recipient of the 2013 Emile T. Fisher Dental Scholarship. Sawyer is a 28-year-old wife and mother of two who says the $400 will make a huge difference in her life. While she’s been in school, her husband has been the sole bread-winner in their family. Ashley Sawyer plans on using the scholarship monies to pay for an important phase in her future career as a dental hygienist.

Dental hygiene student and Emile T. Fisher scholar, Ashley Sawyer, poses with Columbus Technical College Director of Institutional Advancement, Gloria Dodds.

“With this money, I would be able to attend the upcoming dental hygiene board review trip without taking food off the table to cover the cost,” she said.

Sawyer has expanded her learning environment beyond attending classes and clinicals at Columbus Technical College. She has volunteered to serve whenever possible at area elementary schools’ career day events and also participates in community clinics held at the College.

Having what she calls “a burning desire” to make a difference in the community’s oral health, one smile at a time,” Ashley Sawyer is well on her way.
