BIO 2117 - Introductory Microbiology - Provides students with a foundation in basic microbiology with emphasis on infectious diseases. Topics include characterization, classification, and description of microorganisms; use of compound microscope; morphology and fine structure of bacteria; gram positive and gram negative bacteria; reproduction and growth of bacteria; viral diseases; host-parasite relationship; host defense mechanisms; epidemiology; antimicrobial and chemotherapeutic agents; control of microorganisms; and laboratory safety. Prerequisite: C or better in BIO 193
