CTC and Flint River Nursing Students Receive Hartline ScholarshipAugust 25, 2008 - Columbus Technical College Associate Degree Nursing students, Sarah Scoggins and Lori Rigby have each been named the proud and deserving recipients of the W.G. Hartline Scholarship. The $500 scholarship will help offset the cost of tuition and fees for these future nurses. Lori is enrolled at Flint River Technical College in Thomaston; she is taking classes through a partnership formed with Columbus Technical College.
In their applications for the scholarship, Lori and Sarah both reflected on how they always wanted to help people and entering the nursing field would give them the perfect opportunity to do that. Volunteering for organizations like Habitat for Humanity, the Empty Stocking Fund and Relay for Life, helped build the foundation for Lori Rigby to pursue a career in nursing. "I am meant to be a nurturer, a care giver, a peace maker, an advocate, a motivator and an encourager. I am meant to be a nurse," Lori wrote. Sarah Scoggins is a single mom and a grandmother who lives in Richland, GA. She’s always wanted to be a nurse and now she’s seeing her dream fulfilled.
"My career goal is to become a Community Health Nurse," Sarah wrote. "I have lived here (in Richland) all my life and my family goes back several generations. There is the need for health care professionals and I would be honored to be of service to them." The W.G. Hartline Scholarship is named in memory of Mr. W.G. "Griff" Hartline, former president of Columbus Technical College. Mr. Hartline served the College from 1965 – 1994 and was president from 1979 – 1994. The scholarship is awarded each Fall Quarter to a deserving first year nursing student (or students).
