Hartline Scholarship Helps Students Fund Nursing Education

August 31, 2009: Columbus Technical College Associate Degree Nursing students Amanda Young and Amy Bentoski have each been named the proud and deserving recipients of the 2009 W.G. Hartline Scholarship. The $500 scholarship will help offset the cost of tuition and fees for these first year students and future nurses. Amy is enrolled at Flint River Technical College in Thomaston, GA; she is taking classes through a partnership formed with Columbus Technical College.

Amy Bentoski was tossing around the idea of leaving corporate America for a career which she hoped would be more "fulfilling." Her pondering soon turned into planning as she was laid off from her job of ten years in October of 2008. After about a month of reflection and talking to friends and peers, Amy realized nursing would be the ideal path for her.

"I came to realize that nursing is more than 'taking care' of someone," Amy wrote in her scholarship application. "Nursing is a multi-faceted role that encompasses not only caregiver but also educator, advocate, case manager, counselor and many other roles. Nursing is a profession of high integrity and compassion."

Fellow Hartline Scholarship winner Amanda Young said she chose the Columbus Technical College Associate Degree Nursing program for many reasons but the affordable tuition was the final decision-maker. Amanda is excited about the opportunity to help others.

"I look forward to making a tangible difference in peoples' lives," Amanda wrote. "I want to help people when they are most vulnerable. I want to help improve the quality of life for my clients. I want to help save lives."

The W.G. Hartline Scholarship is named in memory of Mr. W.G. "Griff" Hartline, former president of Columbus Technical College. Mr. Hartline served the College from 1965 - 1994 and was president from 1979 - 1994. The scholarship is awarded each Fall Quarter to a deserving first year nursing student (or students).
