NewsMay 2008CTC to Welcome Governor, State Officials for Health Sciences Groundbreaking Ceremony A dream that has been about six years in the making is about to come true at Columbus Technical College. The College will be breaking ground for the Dr. Robert L. Wright, Jr. Health Sciences Center on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the site of the future campus on River Road. Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue will be on hand at the ceremony. So will the Commissioner of the Technical College System of Georgia, members of the local legislative delegation, and many other civic and community leaders. Career Development Week and Career Launch a Success Columbus Technical College's Career Development week and annual Career Launch job fair were huge successes! The events were coordinated by the Career Connections Center and the Economic Development Division at Columbus Technical College. Nursing Shortage, Recruiting in the News Linn Storey, Dean of the School of Health Sciences, contributed to WTVM's recent feature on nurse recruiting. The story highlighted the critical shortage of nurses nationwide and upcoming job fairs. April 2008College GOAL Winner Honored by City Council Columbus Technical College's 2008 GOAL (Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership) winner and Legal Office Specialist student, Stacie Kimbell, was honored by the Columbus Consolidated Government Tuesday morning. Students Shine at SkillsUSA Columbus Technical College students won several medals at the regional SkillsUSA competition in Dublin, Georgia.The students put in many extra hours in preparing for the competition. Advisors also worked very hard preparing and motivating students. Nursing Students Provide Health Screenings for Local Boy Scouts April 17, 2008 - Columbus Technical College nursing students got some real life medical experience recently while helping area Boy Scouts stay healthy. Members of the Student Nurses' Association, along with four physicians and one medical student from The Medical Center volunteered their time Tuesday night (April 15, 2008) to perform physicals on about 40 Boy Scouts. BRAC Grant to Help Columbus Technical College with Workforce Development April 16, 2008 - Thanks to a multi-million dollar grant from the Federal government, Columbus Technical College will be able to prepare more students for the area workforce. A check for $3 million was presented to the Valley Partnership at a news conference on April 16, 2008. That money is earmarked for training in several strategic economic areas in the state including: automotive maintenance, aerospace advanced manufacturing, information and communication technologies and industrial construction. The $3 million was part of a total $5 million grant that is tied to BRAC (Base Closure and Realignment Commission). PBL Students Excel at State Competition Congratulations to the Columbus Technical College Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) team! They did an outstanding job at the State competition in Atlanta April 12-13, 2008. Students on the CTC team competed against 34 colleges, universities and technical colleges from across Georgia. Student Organizations Hold Membership Drive The Student Organization Awareness and Membership Drive on Thursday, April 10 was a huge success. Six student organizations from Columbus Technical College were on hand to answer questions and, in many cases, sign up new members. There was even a special table co-sponsored by the Columbus area Chapter of the NAACP and Foxie 105 radio station where folks could register to vote. Kellogg's Snacks Wins Manufacturer of the Year For the second consecutive year, Kellogg's Snacks of Columbus has won Columbus Technical College's Regional Manufacturer of the Year award. Kellogg's will compete against other regional winners during Manufacturing Appreciation Week in Atlanta, April 14 – 18, 2008. Dental Hygiene Student Earns $1,000 Scholarship Columbus Technical College Dental Hygiene student, Dawn Hunsinger, now has $1,000 to help fund her education. Hunsinger, 28, was awarded a scholarship from the American Dental Association Foundation (ADAF) in March. Columbus Technical College Gets "Green" Starting April 8, SkillsUSA students will be kicking off a campus-wide recycling effort. Students will be hosting a Recycling Education booth in the Student Activity Center in Carl Patrick Hall on April 8th and 10th, from 10 AM to 2 PM, to inform students, faculty and staff of ways they can get involved in making our campus more "green." CTC Legal Office Specialist Student Earns GOAL Title Stacie Kimbell, a Legal Office Specialist student, is the winner of the 2008 GOAL (Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership) competition for Columbus Technical College. The results were announced at a ceremony at the Green Island Country Club on April 1, 2008, during a lunchtime meeting of the North Columbus Rotary Club. CTC Rad Tech Students Shine in Atlanta Radiologic Technology students from Columbus Technical College did their home school proud at a recent competition in Atlanta. Radiology students from across the country competed in a Student Bee contest held during the Atlanta Society of Radiologic Technologists/Educators Seminar March 1-4, 2008. March 2008Workforce Training in the News Columbus Technical College was in the news recently as Georgia's workforce training program received a grant from the Department of Labor. Academy Night a Success On March 25, 2008, Columbus Technical College held its third Dual Enrollment Academy Night, in partnership with the Muscogee County School District. This event was held for Muscogee County high school juniors and their parents to teach them about the many benefits of Dual Enrollment. 'Can Do' Regiment Honors CTC Employees Columbus Technical College's Director of Creative Services, Scott Gossard, and Audio-Visual Technologist, Chris Graves, were honored by the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment on March 17, 2008. Scott and Chris volunteered their time in December to videotape messages from family members of the "Can Do" Regiment. Health Sciences Coordinator Barbara Gaither and Son Represent Easter Seals at Legislative Session Members of the Columbus Legislative Delegation take a break from the 2008 Session to honor the 2008 National Youth Representative for Easter Seals, Scottie Gaither. Fighting Rising Fuel Costs Mr. Tim Justice, Dean of the School of Applied Business, was interviewed recently by WRBL for a story on rising fuel prices. Autism Hope Center Holds Open House The first phase of the Autism Hope Center in Columbus is finally a reality. About 30 community members were on hand at the Open House for the Autism Hope Center Thursday at Columbus Technical College. Dental Assisting Students Pass National Board Exam Students in the Dental Assisting program at Columbus Technical College recently earned a 100% passing rate on their National Board exam. College Enrollment Professionals Recognized March 5, 2008 - Columbus Technical College would like to congratulate our Director of Admissions, Nichole Kennedy, our Registrar, Kermelle Hensley and our Recruitment Manager, Tara Askew. February 2008Dual Enrollment Students and Their 'Businesses' Honored with Reception February 29, 2008 - High school students enrolled in classes at Columbus Technical College were the belles of the ball at a reception in their honor on Friday, February 29, 2008. The 29 students, representing nine area high schools, comprise the first group of students to enroll in a new program through the College's Economic Development Department called the "Financial Services Professional Program" or FSP. Four GOAL Finalists Announced February 28, 2008 - The process to choose a top student for Columbus Technical College for 2008 continues. New Award Honors Dr. Edith Thompson February 25, 2008 - Dr. Edith "Edie" Thompson, a longtime representative of Columbus Technical College and tireless advocate for technical education, now has an award in her honor. Representatives from the Lighthouse State Planning Committee with the Technical College System of Georgia surprised Dr. Thompson with her award at a Columbus Technical College Board Meeting in January. SkillsUSA and Career Expo 2008 Help Students Prepare for the Future February 25, 2008 - Columbus Technical College was bustling with activity Friday, February 22nd. Two big events on campus helped young people learn about future educational and career opportunities. The College hosted over 100 area high school students in the annual SkillsUSA competition. In conjunction with SkillsUSA, the College also hosted the 2008 Career Expo. Middle and high school students from Muscogee and surrounding counties participated. HERO Scholarship Winners February 11, 2008 - Four Columbus Technical College students have been awarded the HERO (Helping Educate Reservists and their Offspring) Scholarship for Winter quarter 2008. It is the second time that students Monty Eller (Internet Specialist Degree) and Roberto Martinez (Management Supervisory Development Diploma) were awarded the Scholarship. Joining them this year are Kristina Marshall (Accounting) and Stephen Robertson (Drafting). Young 'Mathletes' Compete at Columbus Technical College February 11, 2008 - The 3rd annual MATHCOUNTS competition at Columbus Technical College was a huge success! Ninety-three middle school students from 12 Muscogee schools competed for trophies, graphing calculators and most of all, bragging rights. Blackmon Road Middle School was the big winner; the team placed first overall. Four Students Receive Radiology Scholarship February 5, 2008 - Four Columbus Technical College Radiology students will be getting a helping hand with their school expenses, thanks to a special scholarship program. Each year, two seniors and two freshmen from Columbus Technical College are awarded the Aranas Scholarship for Radiology. The winners for 2008 were announced today. Cosmetology Students Offer Help through Haircuts January 28, 2008 - Columbus Technical College cosmetology students sharpened their scissors and helped some members of the Columbus area homeless community. In an effort to give back to their community, 12 cosmetology students provided approximately 75 free haircuts for homeless participants at the Homeless Resource Fair on Thursday, January 24, 2008. College Librarian Gloria Battle to be Featured in Local Media January 18, 2008 - One of the Columbus Technical College librarians, Mrs. Gloria Lowe Battle, will be in the media spotlight this Monday, January 21, 2008. Ms. Battle is scheduled to appear as a guest on WTVM’s (Channel 9) 6:00 p.m. newscast, speaking about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his fight for equality. Technical Colleges' State Board Approves Budget September 6, 2007 - The state board that oversees the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) today approved a $385.7 million budget that includes a $5 per credit hour increase in student tuition. The board’s approval came during its monthly meeting, which was held at Coosa Valley Technical College in Rome. Georgia’s technical college tuition has been and will continue to be one of the lowest among the southern states. August 2007'Table Clinics' by CTC Dental Hygiene Students August 21, 2007 - On Friday August 24, 2007, Columbus Technical College Dental Hygiene students will put their learning on the table - literally. As part of the requirements for this program, students must present a table clinic. This is an informal tabletop presentation using oral communication and visual media to inform, clarify and/or review material on a topic. Columbus Technical College Welcomes Respiratory Care Professionals August 17, 2007 - Columbus Technical College played host to the first annual Greater Chattahoochee Respiratory Conference on Friday, August 17, 2007. More than 80 participants registered for this important conference. The participants heard from experts in the field of respiratory care from all over the South (Alabama, Florida, Georgia and North Carolina). Dental Hygiene Students Earn $500 each in Scholarship Money August 9, 2007 - Columbus Technical College Dental Hygiene students Dawn Hunsinger and Leslie Ann Mallory each have $500 to help offset the cost of finishing school. The Emilie T. Fisher Foundation for Dental Education in Georgia, Inc. provided the $1,000 total scholarship money for two students (seniors) to use toward the cost of tuition and supplies. Stay-in-School Grant Awarded to CTC July 25, 2007 - Columbus Technical College (CTC) has been awarded a $53,207 grant aimed at helping young people stay in school. The “Stay in School” grant is a competitive grant, totaling $1 million; it is funded through Georgia’s Stay in School program. Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue announced that as part of his proposed budget, he is following the lead of the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education (DTAE) in recommending that state funding to construct a new Health Sciences building for Columbus Technical College be approved.
