NewsAugust 2008Cost-Saving Measures at CTC to Include 4-Day Work Week August 27, 2008 - In an effort to save on utility costs and help offset the soaring prices of fuel and other services, Columbus Technical College will begin a four-day work and class schedule starting October 1, 2008. This Monday-Thursday week will continue through summer of 2009 and will be evaluated for continuation beyond that time. College Honored for Extraordinary Support of Georgia National Guard and Reserve August 21, 2008 - The Georgia Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense, announced today that Columbus Technical College was honored with an "Above and Beyond" award in recognition of extraordinary support of its employees who serve in the Georgia National Guard and Reserve. First Diagnostic Medical Sonography Class Ready to Graduate August 15, 2008 - Columbus Technical College would like to congratulate its first graduating class of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Program Manager, Gail Malatich, says four of her eight students have already been hired and the others are interviewing for jobs. Carpentry Class Lends a Hand to Repair Playground Columbus Technical College carpentry students and instructor Jaime Fernandez were glad to lend a hand after a local Salvation Army playground was damaged by vandalism. The Columbus Tech crew repaired the damage as a service to Salvation Army officials and local kids who use the facility. Respiratory Professionals Come to Columbus Technical College An estimated 100 professionals from the area's respiratory care field will be honing their skills at an annual conference at Columbus Technical College. The Greater Chattahoochee Respiratory Conference will provide an opportunity for participants to earn Continuing Education Units while giving them a chance to network and learn more about their profession. Dental Assisting Grads Janice Williams and Nicole Brown Earn Dental Hygiene Degrees July 16, 2008 - Columbus Technical College would like to congratulate Janice Williams and Nicole Brown upon their completion and graduation from the Dental Hygiene program in June. This is particularly notable because ever since the implementation of the Dental Assisting diploma program there has yet to be a student who completed it and then went back to CTC to complete the Dental Hygiene degree program. Janice and Nicole have both accomplished that task. Columbus Technical College's Dean of Health Sciences, Linn Storey, was recently interviewed by Fox 54 reporter Jason Dennis for a story on two-year programs. Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Students Receive Stipends July 2, 2008 - Columbus Technical College Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) students were greeted with a big surprise when they came to campus Wednesday morning. Each student was awarded a stipend worth $680 to help offset the cost of their education. The stipend originated from the generosity of late Carmike Cinema founder and Columbus resident, Carl Patrick. Once the monies from that source were depleted, the Columbus Technical Foundation was able to secure funds to continue the ADN stipend. All 70 students will receive the stipend, which totals $47,600. Round up your change for a good cause July 1 , 2008 – Columbus Technical College is participating in the fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House of West Georgia. As part of this campaign, Columbus Technical College Instructor Julie Thomas will work at the McDonald's on Manchester Expressway from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM. Just by eating lunch there during that time, and by agreeing to round your change up to the next dollar, you'll help families with sick children. College Named a Favorite by Ledger Readers June 25, 2008 – Columbus Technical College has been named "Favorite College" by the annual Readers' Choice Awards program sponsored by the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer newspaper. Redding Honored for Years of Service June 23, 2008 - Columbus Technical College President J. Robert "Bob" Jones and Director of the Technical College Directors' Association, Adie Shimandle, presented out-going Trustee, C.P. Redding with a certificate honoring his years of service. SkillsUSA Team to Compete in Kansas City June 23, 2008 - Columbus Technical College's 2008 SkillsUSA team has left for Kansas City, Missouri to vie for national titles. Ten students and four advisors have made the trip. Competition begins Tuesday, June 24 and ends with an awards ceremony on Friday, June 27. First Class of Respiratory Care Students Boasts 100% Graduation Rate June 17, 2008 - Every member of Columbus Technical College's first class of Respiratory Care students can now call themselves Respiratory Care Practitioners. That's because 100% of the students who started the new program in winter of 2006 have graduated! Besides meeting the classroom and clinical requirements, all nine students also passed the Comprehensive Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Self-Assessment Exam as well as the National Board for Respiratory Care's (NBRC) Entry Level CRT (Certified Respiratory Technician) Examination. Columbus Technical College Names "Instructor of the Year" June 16, 2008 - Surgical Technology Instructor and Lead Advisor for the School of Health Sciences, Donna Emmons, has been named the "Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year" for Columbus Technical College for 2008-2009. The Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction honors the Technical College System of Georgia's most outstanding instructors. CTC Dental Hygiene Students Earn Accolades June 6, 2008 - Columbus Technical College Dental Hygiene seniors Leslie Ann Mallory and Crystal Reid have earned some extra bragging rights. Exempting Hours from HOPE will Help Dual Enrollment Students Succeed June 4, 2008 - Starting this summer, high school students participating in the Dual Enrollment program at Columbus Technical College will no longer have to worry about using up too many HOPE hours. Nursing Students Provide Health Screenings for Local Boy Scouts April 17, 2008 - Columbus Technical College nursing students got some real life medical experience recently while helping area Boy Scouts stay healthy. Members of the Student Nurses' Association, along with four physicians and one medical student from The Medical Center volunteered their time Tuesday night (April 15, 2008) to perform physicals on about 40 Boy Scouts. BRAC Grant to Help Columbus Technical College with Workforce Development April 16, 2008 - Thanks to a multi-million dollar grant from the Federal government, Columbus Technical College will be able to prepare more students for the area workforce. A check for $3 million was presented to the Valley Partnership at a news conference on April 16, 2008. That money is earmarked for training in several strategic economic areas in the state including: automotive maintenance, aerospace advanced manufacturing, information and communication technologies and industrial construction. The $3 million was part of a total $5 million grant that is tied to BRAC (Base Closure and Realignment Commission). PBL Students Excel at State Competition Congratulations to the Columbus Technical College Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) team! They did an outstanding job at the State competition in Atlanta April 12-13, 2008. Students on the CTC team competed against 34 colleges, universities and technical colleges from across Georgia. Student Organizations Hold Membership Drive The Student Organization Awareness and Membership Drive on Thursday, April 10 was a huge success. Six student organizations from Columbus Technical College were on hand to answer questions and, in many cases, sign up new members. There was even a special table co-sponsored by the Columbus area Chapter of the NAACP and Foxie 105 radio station where folks could register to vote. Kellogg's Snacks Wins Manufacturer of the Year For the second consecutive year, Kellogg's Snacks of Columbus has won Columbus Technical College's Regional Manufacturer of the Year award. Kellogg's will compete against other regional winners during Manufacturing Appreciation Week in Atlanta, April 14 – 18, 2008. Dental Hygiene Student Earns $1,000 Scholarship Columbus Technical College Dental Hygiene student, Dawn Hunsinger, now has $1,000 to help fund her education. Hunsinger, 28, was awarded a scholarship from the American Dental Association Foundation (ADAF) in March. Columbus Technical College Gets "Green" Starting April 8, SkillsUSA students will be kicking off a campus-wide recycling effort. Students will be hosting a Recycling Education booth in the Student Activity Center in Carl Patrick Hall on April 8th and 10th, from 10 AM to 2 PM, to inform students, faculty and staff of ways they can get involved in making our campus more "green." CTC Legal Office Specialist Student Earns GOAL Title Stacie Kimbell, a Legal Office Specialist student, is the winner of the 2008 GOAL (Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership) competition for Columbus Technical College. The results were announced at a ceremony at the Green Island Country Club on April 1, 2008, during a lunchtime meeting of the North Columbus Rotary Club. CTC Rad Tech Students Shine in Atlanta Radiologic Technology students from Columbus Technical College did their home school proud at a recent competition in Atlanta. Radiology students from across the country competed in a Student Bee contest held during the Atlanta Society of Radiologic Technologists/Educators Seminar March 1-4, 2008. March 2008Workforce Training in the News Columbus Technical College was in the news recently as Georgia's workforce training program received a grant from the Department of Labor. Academy Night a Success On March 25, 2008, Columbus Technical College held its third Dual Enrollment Academy Night, in partnership with the Muscogee County School District. This event was held for Muscogee County high school juniors and their parents to teach them about the many benefits of Dual Enrollment. 'Can Do' Regiment Honors CTC Employees Columbus Technical College's Director of Creative Services, Scott Gossard, and Audio-Visual Technologist, Chris Graves, were honored by the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment on March 17, 2008. Scott and Chris volunteered their time in December to videotape messages from family members of the "Can Do" Regiment. Autism Hope Center Holds Open House The first phase of the Autism Hope Center in Columbus is finally a reality. About 30 community members were on hand at the Open House for the Autism Hope Center Thursday at Columbus Technical College. New Award Honors Dr. Edith Thompson February 25, 2008 - Dr. Edith "Edie" Thompson, a longtime representative of Columbus Technical College and tireless advocate for technical education, now has an award in her honor. Representatives from the Lighthouse State Planning Committee with the Technical College System of Georgia surprised Dr. Thompson with her award at a Columbus Technical College Board Meeting in January. SkillsUSA and Career Expo 2008 Help Students Prepare for the Future February 25, 2008 - Columbus Technical College was bustling with activity Friday, February 22nd. Two big events on campus helped young people learn about future educational and career opportunities. The College hosted over 100 area high school students in the annual SkillsUSA competition. In conjunction with SkillsUSA, the College also hosted the 2008 Career Expo. Middle and high school students from Muscogee and surrounding counties participated. HERO Scholarship Winners February 11, 2008 - Four Columbus Technical College students have been awarded the HERO (Helping Educate Reservists and their Offspring) Scholarship for Winter quarter 2008. It is the second time that students Monty Eller (Internet Specialist Degree) and Roberto Martinez (Management Supervisory Development Diploma) were awarded the Scholarship. Young 'Mathletes' Compete at Columbus Technical College February 11, 2008 - The 3rd annual MATHCOUNTS competition at Columbus Technical College was a huge success! Ninety-three middle school students from 12 Muscogee schools competed for trophies, graphing calculators and most of all, bragging rights. Blackmon Road Middle School was the big winner; the team placed first overall. Four Students Receive Radiology Scholarship February 5, 2008 - Four Columbus Technical College Radiology students will be getting a helping hand with their school expenses, thanks to a special scholarship program. Each year, two seniors and two freshmen from Columbus Technical College are awarded the Aranas Scholarship for Radiology. The winners for 2008 were announced today. January 2008Over 400 Job Seekers Attend KIA Job Fair at Columbus Technical College January 31, 2008 - Columbus Technical College saw a record-breaking turnout for folks hoping to land a job with KIA. Cosmetology Students Offer Help through Haircuts January 28, 2008 - Columbus Technical College cosmetology students sharpened their scissors and helped some members of the Columbus area homeless community. Medical Managers Group Awards $2,600 in Scholarships to Columbus Tech Students December 12, 2007 - The West Central Georgia Medical Managers Association (WCGMMA) has awarded $2,600 in scholarship money to five Columbus Technical College students studying either Medical Assisting or Radiologic Technology. The scholarship winners are: Renee Martinez/Medical Assisting, Philip Andrews/Radiology, Christy Ellerbee/Medical Assisting, Lori Fuller/Radiology, and Tronual Gainey/Medical Assisting. CTC Dental Hygiene Students Teach Young People About Tobacco Dangers When asked by the Tidwell Cancer Foundation, Inc. if they could help teach Elementary school students about the dangers of tobacco, all 13 Columbus Technical College Dental Hygiene students immediately jumped at the opportunity. Technical Colleges' State Board Approves Budget September 6, 2007 - The state board that oversees the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) today approved a $385.7 million budget that includes a $5 per credit hour increase in student tuition. Funding for Columbus Technical College Recommended by Governor January 11, 2007 - Columbus Technical College received some good news late Wednesday afternoon. Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue announced that as part of his proposed budget, he is following the lead of the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education (DTAE) in recommending that state funding to construct a new Health Sciences building for Columbus Technical College be approved.
