The weekend of April 6th – 8th was a big one for students with the Columbus Technical College Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda (a.k.a. Future Business Leaders of America).

The weekend of April 6th – 8th was a big one for students with the Columbus Technical College Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda (a.k.a. Future Business Leaders of America).  That’s because they represented their school in competitions against 15 other technical colleges at the annual State PBL event. Contests included: accounting, medical assisting, criminal justice, and business administration. 

The PBL advisor and program director for Columbus Technical College’s Human Resource Management degree, Crystal Waye, is her students’ biggest fan.

“Nothing makes me more proud of my students knowing that we have a foundation of trust,” Waye said. “They trusted me to lead them into their own paths of greatness and I trusted them to find their inner strength. I live by my personal quote, ‘you have to be willing to follow your students first, and then you can lead them to where they want to go!’”

In this case, they’ll all be going to Baltimore from June 23-26 to compete at the National level.  Congratulations!

Chapter awards included:

  • 1st Place – March of Dimes Fundraiser
  • 2nd Place – FBLA Interactions with Shaw High School and Early College Academy
  • Platinum Seal Award of Merit – completion of 40 activities as a chapter
  • 2018 Chapter of the Year Recipient
  • 2018 Advisor of the Year Recipient – Crystal Waye
  • 2018 Co-Advisor of the Year Recipient – Pamela Knight
  • 2nd Place Business Annual Report (Kimberly Handford & Samuel Oliver)
  • 2nd Place Community Service Report (ShaDarrius Jones & Tamika Williams)
  • Top Achievers for CMAP (Career Membership Achievement Program) Awards
  • Columbus Technical College made up 56% of all CMAP winners in the State of Georgia this year and 22% of all President Level CMAP winners. Out of the five President CMAP Winners from Georgia, four were from Columbus Technical College. This is also the first time in over ten years that Columbus Tech PBL has had a President Level CMAP winner!

The students’ competitions and wins were as follows:

  • Henry Felton III (Muscogee) competed and placed 5th in Contemporary Sports Issues and 3rd in Information Management.
  • Kimberly Handford (Muscogee) competed and placed 5th in Computer Concepts and 4th in Justice Administration.
  • ShaDarrius Jones (Muscogee) competed and placed 3rd in Business Ethics with teammate Tamika Williams (Lee County, AL) and 2nd in Small Business Plan. Jones achieved all three levels of CMAP.
  • Rachetau McCoy (Muscogee) competed in Retail Management and placed 3rd in Microeconomics. Ms. McCoy achieved all three levels of CMAP.
  • Samuel Oliver (Stewart) competed and placed 1st in both Computer Application and Desktop Publishing. Oliver was also the 2018 Who’s Who Recipient for Columbus Tech and achieved all three levels of CMAP.
  • Silvana Rucker (Muscogee) competed in Organizational Behavior and placed 2nd in Project Management.
  • Afrika Sansbury (Muscogee) competed and placed 3rd in Accounting Principles and 2nd in Financial Services.
  • Kyandra Smith (Muscogee) competed in Retail Management and placed 1st in Microeconomics.
  • Lacie Spencer (Muscogee) placed 4th in Client Services and 2nd in Help Desk.
  • Tamika Williams placed 3rd in Business Ethics with teammate ShaDarrius Jones and 3rd in Desktop Publishing. Ms. Williams was out top March of Dimes fundraiser bringing in $500.00.
